If you’re someone who wears eyeglasses and contacts, and you love to wear makeup this post is for you! I am going to share all of my tips and tricks with you to make the most of your makeup routine and enhance your features while using contact lenses and glasses. Here we go!
Hygiene Tips
First off, let’s get the boring bits out of the way. Wash your hands well to prevent the transfer of dirt, oil, bacteria, and makeup to your contact lenses or glasses. Hygiene is key for your eye health and the longevity of your products. I know, I know, it sounds like a given, but if you’re in a rush or particularly tired this step gets skipped more often than it should. Be sure to wash your makeup brushes regularly, sharpen eye pencils after each use, never share your eye makeup with anyone and replace your eye makeup frequently. If you’re curious about expiry timelines for particular products check out our blog post all about that here.
Makeup Application Tricks
Since you’ll have your glasses off to apply makeup, make things easier for yourself by using a magnifying mirror. I like one that flips from a regular mirror to a magnified surface. You’ll be able to see the little details and there won’t be any surprises when you put your glasses on to check out the final look. Putting your contacts on before you apply your eye makeup is best, to keep them as clean as possible and help you see your artistry!
When your glasses fit you correctly they won’t slide around and your eyelashes won’t touch the glasses. We can help you to select a frame that fits your facial features appropriately as well as support your prescription properly! Use an eyelash curler to curl your lashes up and away from your lenses, and wear long wearing/waterproof mascara to prevent smudging on the back of your lenses.
Brightness is key, especially if you’re like me and enjoy a really bold, thick, or dark eyeglass frame. Since these guys have some real heft to them, they can cast shadows on your face. To counterbalance any shadows, brightening the under eye area with a peach-based concealer can help. Apply to the inner corner of the eyes blending upward, as well as under the eye over any shadows blending downwards and outwards in gentle pats to avoid pulling the skin. A light base eyeshadow with a satin finish will create brightness behind a dark frame by softly reflecting light without looking too garish. To define your eye use a matte eyeshadow a few shades darker in the crease of your eyelid. Try corresponding the thickness of your eyeliner to the relative thickness of your frame, so your eyes don’t get “lost.” A thicker line for a thicker frame, a medium line for a frame of moderate thickness, you get the idea.
Remove that makeup!
At the end of the day don’t forget to remove your makeup! A solid makeup removal routine with eye care in mind includes washing your hands. Remove your contact lenses – doing your best to avoid contact with any eye makeup – before makeup removal, then follow the care and cleaning routine for your contacts as outlined by your optometrist. This step is the easiest if you wear daily disposables, just take them off and toss! With lenses out then you’re ready to take off your makeup. Don’t forget to clean the lenses in your glasses, and if you find your frames are getting a bit gunky please bring them in to see us for a full tune up and clean up!
We hope these tips help you enjoy your makeup routine and enhance your makeup look while complimenting your glasses! Happy artistry!
